Unanticipated Impact is Delightful

Women who have retired from the 9 to 5 career life still have much to offer as is evidenced by this letter. See how Arlene is looking for ways, not only to be purposeful, but to be a living example to the younger generation.

Dear JJ,

I have finished reading your book, I am very proud of you. You are an inspiration to all women of different ages.

Even though I am no longer in the work force, your book has proven to me there is still so much more I can do. When I was at Bank of America, I trained  other associates who went on  to be Managers, Assistant Managers and VIP’s. I thought, why not go back to teaching others.

I started by volunteering at my Church’s Religious Education class assisting teachers for First Graders.

Last night was my first time, at the end of the program we still had five minutes to go.The children were getting out of hand, the teacher was beginning to lose control as they ran to the door to leave. I said. “How would you all like to play Simon Says?”

At first they all looked at me (including Tracy the teacher) as if to say, this is a religious class and we are going to play a game? Tracy said. “Let’s listen to Ms. Arlene.”

I started to teach them the sign of the Cross by saying Simon says put your right hand on your forehead. By the time they were through they did the sign of the Cross. Then at the end, Simon said out loud the sign of the Cross and they followed.

I was supprised how many did not know the sign of the cross, by that time the parents were at the open door watching. Tracy thinks this would be good to end each class this way.

Tonight I go to my second First Grade class wish me luck.

I went to see the movie “I Don’t Know How She Does It”. All I could think about was you, your book, and how much more control you have on your life than the character in the film.

Arlene

I published my book The Working Woman’s GPS, when the journey to have it all has led you astray, this summer and I have been touched and overwhelmed by the response. At first, I thought the book was designed to reach a specific audience of working women with families who had achieved success and yet felt something missing in their lives. But as you see the book has already impacted women of all ages and in all stages of life.

You may never know the true impact of your actions outside of the initial warmth in your heart.
