I found this image on Facebook. I don’t know about you, but many of the people I have friended on Facebook share images, quotes and sayings that are meant to motivate, educate and/or encourage. Most of them I read and pass over without more than a passing glance or a quick nod of agreement. But there was something about these simple rules that stopped me in my tracks.
1. If you don’t go after what you want, you’ll never achieve it. It reminds me of people who complain about how something is and yet never take a stand or offer a suggestion for a way to do it differently. It is the same as the definition of insanity – “doing the same thing and expecting different results.”
2. If we don’t ask, the answer is always no. This is so true. In fact, this is a good lesson for our children to learn early on. There is no shame in asking for help. It isn’t embarrassing, it doesn’t make you look stupid, the other kids will not laugh at you and if they do? So what? If you ask, you’ll now have new knowledge or get help or achieve what you want. It is true that you may still get “no” for your answer, but you might also get “yes.” Isn’t it worth the 50/50 odds?
3. If you don’t step forward, you’ll always be in the same place. The other day I wrote about making one change for the positive this year. Did you select something? Have you started? I decided to drink more water. Have I? Well…. the truth is, if I don’t step forward, pour and drink that water, I’ll never move toward that healthier more hydrated me. We have to take a step.
So what do you think of these simple rules? Are they simple? They may be simple to say, but more challenging to do. However, I challenge us all to give them a try.
