Sharing Your Time & Resources with Others, Pays Dividends

I have often talked about the importance of mentoring and giving back. One of the great programs designed to support and assist college students is the Malone Scholarship which has sponsored over 100 students in the past 15 years. I often find time to participate and meet these inspiring students.  Their energy, drive and apprecaition is amazing and I always walk away with my energy level soaring high!

Following is a recap of this incredible day:

15th Annual Malone Scholarship Golf Classic

July 11, 2011 marked the 15th Anniversary of the Malone Scholarship Golf Classic, a fundraising event that benefits the Malone Scholarship Program, which is managed by College Now. The Malone Scholarship Program was established by College Now Board member and WMJI Radio Personality, Jimmy Malone, his wife April, and their daughter, Angela. Together, they have supported more than 100 students as they pursue their college education goals.

The Golf Classic is a great way for supporters of the Malone Scholarship Program to meet the students who benefit from its support. Malone Scholars have the opportunity to network with business and community leaders over lunch. Additionally, they spend some time getting to know the Westfield Group, learning about the business and touring the corporate campus, which also includes the golf course for the event. Also during the Golf Classic, Malone Scholars who are upperclassmen share their stories with the rising college freshman, who, in turn, can connect with other Malone scholars who already attend the same colleges they will be starting.

And, of course, the Malone Golf Classic is a great opportunity for the new Malone Scholars to get to know Jimmy Malone, and vice versa. Jimmy provides support in many ways beyond the scholarships. He meets with his students throughout the school year, making sure they have everything they need; he introduces them to his network and helps them build networks of their own; and he gives them his phone number and email with the expectation that they will reach out to him if they encounter any problems. Malone Scholars have a 90% graduation rate; and this year, they will be attending a wide range of schools, including Gannon College, Cleveland State University, Bethune Cookman College, Ohio State University, and the University of Akron, among others. The Malone Scholarship Program has impressive results, and that is why so many people support it through the Golf Classic.

This year, 39 foursomes took to the Westfield Country Club golf courses. They were greeted by the Malone Scholars, who lined the pathway to the pavilion where lunch was served. Golfers got about halfway through the course before being called in due to thunderstorms. The rain didn’t dampen anyone’s spirits, though, as the golfers mingled in the clubhouse before the live auction and dinner.

Many thanks go to Jimmy Malone, Golf Classic sponsors and supporters, and finally, the golfers for being a part of such a great event. We look forward to seeing everyone next year!
