Say What You Wanna Say

The song Brave by Sara Bareilles has been calling to me for several weeks. Every once and a while a song will speak to something inside that acts almost like a mantra or a recipe for doing something differently.

Sara recently performed her chart topping song on Ellen – an orchestral version and as she stood by the piano singing the message in a simple and straight forward manner I thought about all of the women and children around the globe who may be afraid to speak up – to call attention to themselves, to say what is on their mind.

Then last night during the Golden Globes a television commercial for Bing came on and using the song Brave, showed snippets of women around the world who HAVE stood up to make a difference. Women like:

Malala Yousafzai

Margaret Thatcher

Gabrielle Giffords

Antoinette Tuff

The website is Bing.com/heroicwomen and is well worth a look at some of the amazing girls and women who have been brave and voiced their opinion or have spoken up to call attention to injustice. The web page celebrates the accomplishments of women in 2013 both in the United States and in countries around the globe; celebrities and women just like you and I who defend our country, teach our children, face insurmountable goals and find success.

The words to this song give us permission, for those who feel they need it, to stand up and let our voice be heard.

Following are the lyrics to Brave by Sara Bareilles, read them, sing them along to the song when it comes on the radio, let them resonate with you and then “say what you wanna say.”

Brave, by Sara Bareilles

You can be amazing

You can turn a phrase into a weapon or a drug
You can be the outcast
Or be the backlash of somebody’s lack of love
Or you can start speaking up
Nothing’s gonna hurt you the way that words do
And they settle ‘neath your skin
Kept on the inside and no sunlight
Sometimes a shadow wins
But I wonder what would happen if you

Say what you wanna say
And let the words fall out
Honestly I wanna see you be brave

With what you want to say
And let the words fall out
Honestly I wanna see you be brave

I just wanna see you
I just wanna see you
I just wanna see you
I wanna see you be brave

Everybody’s been there, everybody’s been stared down
By the enemy
Fallen for the fear and done some disappearing
Bow down to the mighty
Don’t run, stop holding your tongue
Maybe there’s a way out of the cage where you live
Maybe one of these days you can let the light in
Show me how big your brave is

Say what you wanna say
And let the words fall out
Honestly I wanna see you be brave

With what you want to say
And let the words fall out
Honestly I wanna see you be brave

Innocence, your history of silence
Won’t do you any good
Did you think it would?
Let your words be anything but empty
Why don’t you tell them the truth?

Say what you wanna say
And let the words fall out
Honestly I wanna see you be brave

With what you want to say
And let the words fall out
Honestly I wanna see you be brave

I just wanna see you
I just wanna see you
I just wanna see you
I wanna see you be brave
